Your phone can already answer unknown numbers for you, ask who's calling, and only ring when it matters. Here's exactly how to switch it on — iPhone and Android, about 30 seconds each.
Apple's built-in screening answers unsaved numbers with an automated prompt and shows you a live transcript before your phone rings.
Open Settings → Apps → Phone.
Tap Screen Unknown Callers.
Choose Ask Reason for Calling. Your iPhone answers unsaved numbers, asks who's calling and why, then rings with a live transcript of their answer. You decide whether to pick up.
Never — the default. Every unsaved number rings and missed calls appear in Recents. No screening at all.
Silence — unsaved numbers are silenced and sent to voicemail, appearing in Recents. Stronger, but you won't know a genuine caller tried until afterwards.
Pixel phones screen with Google Assistant; Samsung offers the same with Bixby Text Call. Both transcribe live so you can jump in or hang up.
Open the Phone app → Settings → Spam and Call Screen.
Tap Call Screen and turn it on.
When an unknown or suspected spam call arrives, tap Screen call (or let automatic screening handle it). Google Assistant asks who's calling and transcribes the answer in real time — pick up or hang up at any point.
Open the Phone app → Settings.
Tap Bixby Text Call and turn it on.
On an incoming call, tap Bixby text call — Bixby answers, converts the caller's speech to text on screen, and you can type replies or take the call.
